Mining Bosses Arrested After Turkish Tragedy

Police have detained 18 people, including mining company executives, as part of an investigation into Turkey's mining disaster.

Prosecutors are questioning five of those detained, according to Turkey's Dogan news agency.

Two final bodies were carried out of the mine as the rescue operation ended on Saturday, taking the number of dead to 301.

Families dispute these figures and have accused the government of a cover-up to hide the true scale of the disaster.

The tragedy, which occurred in Soma, 300 miles south-west of Istanbul, triggered protests across the country over poor industry safety procedures.

Riot police used tear gas and water cannon on protesters in Soma on Friday as several thousands gathered amid intensifying anger with the government.

Bosses at the mining company say a build-up of heat caused the mine to collapse, triggering a blaze which spread rapidly under the surface.

They say the mine was regularly inspected.
