A police officer has been shot to death after he responded to a domestic disturbance at a home that later burned and exploded.

Pictures show the property in Brentwood, New Hampshire, on fire just before the devastating blast on Monday.

Steven Arkell, 48, was killed after responding to the incident.

After the shooting, the house burst into flames. A massive explosion blew the front off the house and within an hour, it was levelled.

Attorney General Joseph Foster said 47-year-old Michael Nolan, the son of the homeowner, is the suspected gunman.

He is believed to have been killed in the blast.

The incident took place in a retirement community called Mill Pond Crossing.

Witnesses claim shooting was heard within the house after officers arrived.

Nearby houses were evacuated while firefighters tackled the blaze.
