World War Two Bomb Kills Bulldozer Driver

A bulldozer driver has been killed and eight other people injured after a Second World War bomb exploded at a rubble storage site in Germany.

Police in the town of Euskirchen, near Bonn, said the blast shattered the windows of nearby offices and houses within 400 metres.

Norbert Hardt, from the Euskirchen Police Department said the blast caused "considerable damage" in the immediate vicinity as well as in nearby streets and "even in the city centre area".

Although unexploded World War II-era bombs are frequently discovered in Germany, it is rare for them to explode and result in death and injury.

In 2012 some 2,500 residents were evacuated from their homes in Munich after a similar bomb was detonated in a controlled explosion which set fire to nearby buildings.

The force of the blast shook the city and sent a giant fireball rising into the sky.

Allied airplanes dropped millions of tons of ordnance on Germany during World War II in an effort to cripple the Nazi war machine.

Tens of thousands of unexploded bombs are believed to be still lying in the ground across the country.
