Fiumicino Airport in Rome was evacuated after a man set himself on fire in a police customs office.

Passengers in terminal three at the airport, to the west of the Italian capital, were evacuated at around 10.40am local time.

An 18-year-old man from the Ivory Coast has been taken to hospital in a serious condition. A policeman who put out the flames also sustained a burn to his arm.

Police said the man doused himself with fuel and set fire to himself with a lighter in a customs police office after showing officials a deportation order.

Sky's Beth Fairweather, who was at the airport, said: "There was a flash of orange light and we could hear a person wailing.

"There was a lot of billowing smoke coming out of the airport and we were evacuated outside."
