Phillip Hughes: Funeral Held For Cricket Star

A funeral service for Australian cricketer Phillip Hughes has taken place in his hometown of Macksville, New South Wales.

The 25-year-old batsman died in hospital in Sydney last week after he was hit on the back of the neck by a cricket ball during New South Wales' first-class match against South Australia.

He had scored 63 runs when he was hit by a short ball from bowler Sean Abbott and was wearing a helmet at the time.

Around 1,000 people, mostly locals, packed into his former Macksville High School for the service, with hundreds more watching on big screens outside.

The service was also broadcast live on national television and on big screens in Australia's major cities, including at the Sydney Cricket Ground where Hughes was fatally injured.

It began with the song Forever Young, and lasted around 75 minutes before finishing with Don't Let The Sun Go Down On Me.

Hughes' siblings, Jason and Megan, paid tribute to their brother during the service on behalf of the family along with his cousin Nino Ramunno.

Megan said: "I'm sorry you cannot be here with us any longer, but I promise that all the dreams and thoughts we had about the future I will continue in your honour.

"There won't be a day that goes by that I won't think of you, I promise I will talk to you every day and keep you company up there."

An emotional Australian captain Michael Clarke struggled as he addressed the service.

He said: "He left a mark on our game that needs no embellishment. I don't know about you but I keep looking for him.

"Is this what we call the spirit? If so, then his spirit is still with me and I hope it never leaves.

"We must dig in... we must dig in and get through to tea. And we must play on. So rest in peace my little brother, I'll see you out in the middle."

The mourners included Prime Minister Tony Abbott, the Australia cricket team and Sean Abbott.

Former Australian players Shane Warne, Ricky Ponting, Glenn McGrath and the Waugh brothers all attended, alongside Richard Hadlee, Brian Lara and India batsman Virat Kohli.

Cricket Australia chief executive James Sutherland also addressed mourners. He said: "Cricket's heart has been pierced with pain, but it will never stop beating. Phillip Hughes... forever unconquered on 63."

Clarke acted as a pallbearer for his close friend following the service as a funeral procession made its way along the main street in the town.

    Iran Denies Airstrikes In Iraq Against IS Targets

    Iran has denied Pentagon claims that it has carried out airstrikes in neighbouring Iraq against Islamic State militants.

    A senior official also insisted that cooperation with the US in such attacks was out of the question.

    The denial comes after a Pentagon spokesman said Iran had carried out raids in eastern Iraq, but said the US had not coordinated with Tehran over the strikes.

    Rear Admiral John Kirby said the US continued to fly missions over Iraq and that it was up to the Iraqi government to avoid conflicts in its own airspace.

    He said it was believed to be the first time Iran had launched manned aircraft from inside Iran to strike targets in Iraq.

    Iranian military leaders have admitted that dozens of their forces have been in Iraq fighting alongside Kurdish troops battling extremists.

    The US has not invited Iran to join the coalition fighting Islamic State and Iran has said it would not join in any case.

    Rear Admiral Kirby said: "There's no reason to believe they are not true, those reports that Iranian aircraft struck targets against IS in eastern Iraq.

    "It's Iraqi airspace and it's for Iraqis to deconflict.

    "We are not coordinating with nor deconflicting with Iranian military."

    But a senior Iranian offical said: "Iran has never been involved in any air strikes against the Daesh (Islamic State) targets in Iraq.

    "Any cooperation in such strikes with America is also out of question for Iran."

    It came as NATO foreign ministers met in Brussels to discuss the threat posed by IS.

    US Secretary of State John Kerry said the battle against IS militants would last "as long as it takes to prevail".

    Bill Cosby Sued Over Playboy Mansion 'Sex Act'

    Bill Cosby is being sued by a California woman who claims the comedian molested her around 1974 when she was 15 years old.

    Judith Huth claims in the sexual battery lawsuit that the incident happened at the Playboy Mansion.

    The document claims she and a friend met Cosby at a Los Angeles film shoot and the comedian later gave them drinks at a tennis club.

    It then states that Cosby took them to the Playboy Mansion. Her suit states Cosby forced her to perform a sex act on him.

    The woman claims she suffered emotional distress and that she discovered its impact within the past three years.

    A hacking attack that crippled key systems at Sony Pictures and led to blockbuster movies being leaked online is increasingly being blamed on Pyongyang after the FBI said some of the software used was compiled in Korean.

    The attack, by a group calling itself the Guardians Of Peace, left the firm's corporate email down for a week and enabled hackers to steal at least four movies, including Second World War drama Fury starring Brad Pitt, which is yet to be released on DVD.

    It has since been downloaded more than one million times.

    The Korean malware has led to increased speculation that Sony was targeted in revenge for its movie The Interview - a comedy about two journalists recruited by the CIA to assassinate North Korean leader Kim Jong-Un.

    The Pyongyang government had previously described the film as "undisguised sponsoring of terrorism" and an "act of war".

  • The FBI has given US firms advice on spotting and handling the malware in a five-page report, but it did not confirm if it was a response to the incident at Sony.

    Sky's Asia Correspondent Mark Stone, in Beijing, said that while North Korea is yet to comment on the cyber attack on Sony, it "takes any slight on its leader very, very seriously".

    "When The Interview trailer came out the North Korean ambassador to the UN made representations to the UN saying that here would be a response," he said.

    "It is only a few months ago that a hairdresser in Ealing was offering a Kim Jong-Un haircut and two senior diplomats from the North Korean embassy went there and told him he couldn't do that because it was very disrespectful."

    He said it was a "plausible possibility" as Pyongyang had carried out previous hacking attacks, but he warned there is a lot of reporting about North Korea which is not correct because of the problems getting news out of the closed country.

    Some reports suggest North Korea may have enlisted Chinese hackers to carry out the attack.

    Last year, Sky News reported US security analysts had identified an anonymous-looking tower block in Shanghai as the possible headquarters of a global hacking operation allegedly run by the Chinese military - the People's Liberation Army Unit 61398.

    In May, five members of China's People's Liberation Army were charged with hacking US companies for trade secrets.

    Cybersecurity experts said the attack on Sony marked the first of its kind on a major US company.

    Hackers have used malware similar to that described in the FBI report to launch attacks on businesses in South Korea and the Middle East, including one against oil producer Saudi Aramco that knocked out some 30,000 computers.

    "I believe the coordinated cyberattack with destructive payloads against a corporation in the US represents a watershed event," Tom Kellermann, chief cybersecurity officer with security software maker Trend Micro Inc, said.

    "Geopolitics now serve as harbingers for destructive cyberattacks."

    The three founders of Hong Kong's Occupy movement say they will "surrender" to police, who they accused of being "out of control".

    Occupy Central leader Benny Tai praised the bravery of the pro-demonstrators protesters, but urged them to leave "this dangerous place".

    "As we prepare to surrender, we three urge the students to retreat - to put down deep roots in the community and transform the movement," he said.

    "Surrendering is not an act of cowardice, it is the courage to act on a promise. To surrender is not to fail, it is a silent denunciation of a heartless government."

    The professor said the movement would now take a new direction to promote civil disobedience, including through education and a fresh social charter.

    He told a news conference that the trio would hand themselves into police on Wednesday and they were prepared to "face all consequences".

  • Mr Tai, fellow academic Chan Kin-man and Baptist minister Chu Yiu-ming founded the Occupy Central civil disobedience group in early 2013 to press for political reform.

    But the trio have increasingly taken a backseat as more radical student groups come to the fore.

    One of those student group's leaders, Joshua Wong, has since become the teenage face of the movement.

    Mr Wong, 18, and two young female members of his Scholarism group went on an "indefinite" hunger strike late on Monday.

    "We are hoping that after the hunger strike we have a chance to speak with government officials openly - then there will be a chance to solve this Hong Kong problem," Mr Wong told reporters 12 hours into the fasting.

    "We would like to put the emphasis on restarting the political reform process."

    The hunger strike came after the protesters clashed with police late on Sunday in one of the worst nights of violence since rallies started on Hong Kong's streets more than two months ago.

    Officers fired pepper spray at students as they broke through police lines and occupied a major road outside the city's legislature, forcing civil servants to stay at home on Monday morning.

    Embattled Hong Kong leader Leung Chun-ying, who demonstrators want to resign, told reporters there would be "resolute action" if the demonstrators returned.

    Mr Leung has also urged the student protesters to look after themselves as temperatures drop in the city.

    "I hope the students that are participating in the hunger strike can take care of their health, especially when the weather is getting colder," he told reporters.

    The protests have also caused a diplomatic row between the UK and China, after a group of British MPs were banned from visiting Hong Kong.

    China said their planned trip to the former colony was "overtly confrontational".

    But Prime Minister David Cameron warned China it was "mistaken" and "counterproductive" to ban the visit.

    Islamic State Leader's Wife Held, Reports Say

    The wife of the Islamic State leader Abu Bakr al Baghdadi and one of his children have been arrested at the Syrian border, according to Lebanese officials.

    They were detained by Lebanese troops in co-ordination with "foreign intelligence apparatus" about 10 days ago, according to local media.

    His wife is said to have been travelling with a fake passport and is being questioned at the headquarters of the Lebanese defence ministry.

    Her name was not released but she is understood to be a Syrian citizen. Islamist social media websites have previously reported that Baghdadi is married but it is unclear whether he has more than one wife.

    The country's security forces have launched a crackdown on IS sympathisers in Lebanon and the intelligence services have been extra vigilant at border crossings.

    Over the past few months they have arrested a number of Islamic militants suspected of staging attacks to expand IS in the country neighbouring Syria.

    Since taking the reins of the terror group in 2010, Baghdadi has transformed it from a local branch of al Qaeda into an independent transnational military force.

    He has succeeded in exploiting the turmoil in Syria and Iraq's weak central authority after the US military withdrawal to seize control of vast areas of land.

    In doing so he has positioned himself as a leading figure in the global jihadi community.

    Baghdadi, who has a $10m (£5.9m) US bounty on his head, has called for "volcanoes of jihad" around the world.

    According to the reward notice, he was born in the Iraqi town of Samarra in 1971.

    A US-led coalition has been seeking to roll back IS territorial gains in Iraq and Syria by launching airstrikes.

    President Barack Obama has pledged to "degrade and ultimately destroy" the group.

    The strikes are part of an effort to give Iraqi forces the time and space to mount a more effective offensive.

    Ebola Fears As Infection Deadline Missed

    A World Health Organisation deadline to halt the deadly Ebola outbreak in West Africa has only been met by Guinea, according to latest figures.

    In October, the organisation launched its plan to isolate 70% of those infected and safely bury 70% of the victims in Guinea, Liberia and Sierra Leone by 1 December.

    But in Liberia, only 23% of cases are isolated and 26% of the needed burial teams are in place.

    In Sierra Leone, around 40% of cases are isolated and 27% of burial teams are operational.

    The Ebola outbreak was first reported in Guinea in March, and has spiralled out of control since a public health emergency was declared in August.

    Dr Bruce Aylward, who is directing the WHO response to Ebola, said: "If we don't do it in 60 days and we take 90 days - number one, a lot more people will die that shouldn't; and number two, we will need that much more capacity on the ground to be able to manage the caseload."

    The number of cases in Liberia and Guinea has declined or stabilised in the last few weeks, but the area around Sierra Leone's capital Freetown has seen a surge in cases.

    Anthony Banbury, who is heading the UN response to the outbreak, said: "There are still going to be many people who catch the disease and many people who die from it."

    The disease has infected more than 16,000 people, with nearly 7,000 people dying, according to WHO figures.

    Last month, the US announced it was scaling back the size and number of Ebola clinics it had promised to build in Liberia.

    The WHO aimed to isolate all Ebola patients and provide safe burials for all victims by 1 January.

    Hong Kong's chief executive has warned pro-democracy protesters not to return to the streets for another night of protests after clashes with police temporarily closed the government headquarters.

    Chaos erupted as the demonstrators, wearing helmets and wielding umbrellas, charged police after officers warned them to retreat.

    Riot police used batons and pepper spray to push them back.

    Local media reported that at least 45 people were arrested and police said 11 officers had been injured.

    Chief executive Leung Chun-ying told reporters there would be "resolute action" if the demonstrators returned.

  • "Some people have mistaken the police's tolerance for weakness," he said.

    "I call for students who are planning to return to the occupation sites tonight not to do so."

    The situation is now said to be calm, although many government offices and shops remained shut mid-morning.

    Leaders at the main activists' site in the Admiralty neighbourhood have said they will escalate their campaign after trying to encircle the government headquarters.

    Sky's Asia Correspondent Mark Stone said of the clashes: "This is the result of total deadlock between the government and the protesters who want the right to choose their own political leader without interference from China.

    "Beijing has said it will allow everyone here to vote but only from candidates chosen by China."

    Police had cleared the area more than a month ago during some of the most violent scenes since the demonstrations began in late September.

    The democracy movement represents one of the biggest threats for China's Communist Party leadership since its bloody 1989 crackdown on pro-democracy student protests in and around Tiananmen Square in Beijing.

    The flare-up comes after four nights of clashes in the working-class district of Mong Kok, across the harbour from Admiralty. 

    The Hong Kong rallies drew more than 100,000 on to the streets at their peak, but numbers have since dwindled to a few hundred.

    Meanwhile, China has been accused of "overtly confrontational" behaviour after saying it will ban a group of British MPs from visiting Hong Kong.

    The Government committee had planned to visit the former British colony as part of an inquiry into its relations with the UK 30 years after the declaration which led to its handover.

    The Chinese embassy said if the group attempted the visit in December then they would be turned away.

    Sir Richard Ottaway, chairman of the Commons Foreign Affairs Committee, said: "I have been informed by the Chinese embassy that if we attempt to travel to Hong Kong we will be refused entry."

    He added: "The Chinese government are acting in an overtly confrontational manner in refusing us access to do our job."

    Sir Richard said he would be calling for an emergency debate in the House of Commons on Monday.

    The joint declaration between China and the UK was signed in 1984 and led to the handover in 1997.

    Hong Kong's chief executive has warned pro-democracy protesters not to return to the streets for another night of protests after clashes with police temporarily closed the government headquarters.

    Chaos erupted as the demonstrators, wearing helmets and wielding umbrellas, charged police after officers warned them to retreat.

    Riot police used batons and pepper spray to push them back.

    Local media reported that at least 45 people were arrested and police said 11 officers had been injured.

    Chief executive Leung Chun-ying told reporters there would be "resolute action" if the demonstrators returned.

  • "Some people have mistaken the police's tolerance for weakness," he said.

    "I call for students who are planning to return to the occupation sites tonight not to do so."

    The situation is now said to be calm, although many government offices and shops remained shut mid-morning.

    Leaders at the main activists' site in the Admiralty neighbourhood have said they will escalate their campaign after trying to encircle the government headquarters.

    Sky's Asia Correspondent Mark Stone said of the clashes: "This is the result of total deadlock between the government and the protesters who want the right to choose their own political leader without interference from China.

    "Beijing has said it will allow everyone here to vote but only from candidates chosen by China."

    Police had cleared the area more than a month ago during some of the most violent scenes since the demonstrations began in late September.

    The democracy movement represents one of the biggest threats for China's Communist Party leadership since its bloody 1989 crackdown on pro-democracy student protests in and around Tiananmen Square in Beijing.

    The flare-up comes after four nights of clashes in the working-class district of Mong Kok, across the harbour from Admiralty. 

    The Hong Kong rallies drew more than 100,000 on to the streets at their peak, but numbers have since dwindled to a few hundred.

    Meanwhile, China has been accused of "overtly confrontational" behaviour after saying it will ban a group of British MPs from visiting Hong Kong.

    The Government committee had planned to visit the former British colony as part of an inquiry into its relations with the UK 30 years after the declaration which led to its handover.

    The Chinese embassy said if the group attempted the visit in December then they would be turned away.

    Sir Richard Ottaway, chairman of the Commons Foreign Affairs Committee, said: "I have been informed by the Chinese embassy that if we attempt to travel to Hong Kong we will be refused entry."

    He added: "The Chinese government are acting in an overtly confrontational manner in refusing us access to do our job."

    Sir Richard said he would be calling for an emergency debate in the House of Commons on Monday.

    The joint declaration between China and the UK was signed in 1984 and led to the handover in 1997.

    Palestinian Woman Shot After Stabbing Israeli

    A Palestinian woman has been shot and wounded after stabbing an Israeli civilian in the southern West Bank, police say.

    The Israeli suffered minor injuries in the stabbing, which happened at a crossroads near the Gush Etzion bloc south of Bethlehem, police said in a statement without providing any further information.

    Police initially said an Israeli soldier was attacked.

    The military said the attacker was "overcome" by security forces and taken for medical treatment.

    Her condition is not known, while the Israeli was treated at the scene.

    Witnesses saw the woman being taken to Jerusalem's Hadassah hospital. A hospital spokeswoman said she was seriously wounded.

    Tensions between Israelis and Palestinians have increased in recent months following a number of deadly attacks in Jerusalem and the fatal stabbing of an Israeli soldier in Tel Aviv.

    Israeli security forces killed the perpetrators of most of those attacks at the scene.

    How The Berlin Wall Came To Be Built

    The Berlin Wall was the Cold War made concrete.

    It went up during one of its frostiest flashpoints; it came down as the eastern bloc unravelled, closely followed by the Soviet Union itself two years later.

    It was built right on the East-West fault-line created by World War Two. (The bunker garden where Hitler was cremated in 1945 became part of no-man's land.) Berlin had always been a Cold War anomaly, located 100 miles behind the Iron Curtain.

    Its three internationally-agreed western sectors, belonging to America, Britain and France, became a refuge for millions of East Germans fleeing in the 1950s.

    The decision to build the wall in August 1961 was a communist act of desperation to prevent itself from bleeding dry.

    Literally overnight, the Berlin border was closed, and gradually reinforced with breeze blocks and barbed wire.

    Soon, the first fatal shooting had occurred, when a young man was machine-gunned swimming a canal by the Reichstag - 135 other victims followed over the next 28 years.

    "The West is doing NOTHING!" ran Bildzeitung's headline.

    Although western leaders condemned the "Wall of Shame", they did not act. There were good reasons. The wall was founded on nuclear stalemate.

    In October 1961, the Soviets detonated a 50-megaton Tsar Bomba which mushroomed more than 50 kilometres high (31 miles).

    The message was not lost on US President John Kennedy who may not have liked the wall, but thought it "a hell of a lot better than a war".

    This stark reality forced a rethink among some western leaders.

    Willy Brandt, social democratic mayor of West Berlin in '61, later Federal chancellor, was the architect of détente - or Ostpolitik - in the late 1960s.

    Now the West de facto recognised the German Democratic Republic; in 1973 both Germanys joined the United Nations.

    Ironically, it was this international "bringing in from the cold" that undermined the wall in the 1980s.

    The date of 9 November, 1989, when thousands thronged the checkpoints and the wall "fell", seemed like another overnight sensation.

    But there was a long fuse.

    East Germany was trapped between Gorbachev's glasnost in the East and the West German Wirtschaftswunder in the West. In return for aid, both demanded human rights reforms which fuelled the mass demonstrations in the hot autumn of 1989.

    Nor should we forget that the fall of the wall was a symptom, not a cause, of the collapse of communism. If the writing was on the wall, it was in Polish and spelled "Solidarity", the path-breaking anti-communist movement under Lech Walesa, or in Hungary, where the first McDonald's behind the Iron Curtain had opened in 1988.

    The fall of the wall completely altered the geo-political landscape. Even doubters such as Mrs Thatcher could not oppose German reunification in 1990.

    By 1994, Russia had left eastern Germany, and NATO was soon on her doorstep. The West had to come to terms with the realities of freedom of movement which for so long had been largely Cold War rhetoric. And the world had learnt about revolution by "people power".
